SMC LUNCHEON SPEAKERS: MICKEY LOLICH AND TOM GATES

Mickey Lolich was a Major League pitcher for 16 seasons, 13 of them with the Detroit Tigers. He is best known for his performance in the 1968 World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals when he earned three complete-game victories, including a win over Bob Gibson in the climactic Game 7. Tom Gage worked for The Detroit News for 39 years, including 35 years as the Detroit Tigers beat writer until retiring in 2015. Gage was awarded the J. G. Taylor Spink Award in 2015.
At the Senior Men’s club luncheon on October 23rd, Lolich and Gage discussed their new book: Joy in Tigertown: A Determined Team, a Resilient City, and our Magical Run to the 1968 World Series. Tom started the discussion by explaining why he got involved with this book and why he feels that Mickey belongs in the Baseball Hall of Fame, and he provided supporting statistics. Read more

SMC LUNCHEON SPEAKER PEGGY HAYES WITH NEW SMC PRESIDENT CHRIS WALSH

At the Senior Men’s Club Luncheon on Tuesday, October 10th, Peggy Hayes, the Executive Director of Services for Older Citizens, told us about this wonderful organization called SOC. Services for Older Citizens is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to helping seniors of the Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods maintain their lives in independence and dignity. It was created in 1978 by a small group from Grosse Pointe and Harper Woods who called their organization “Seniors Onward for Change.” The founders envisioned an organization that would be a one-stop shop with an array of services dedicated to the object of helping senior residents remain in their own home with dignity.
Four years later the name was changed to Services for Older Citizens. For many years SOC operated out of various schools and community centers. In 2012, The Henry Ford Medical Center generously made the Newberry House, formerly the nurses residence at Cottage Hospital, available for a nominal sum. Services for Older Citizens then embarked on an extensive reconstruction project, made possible by generous donations from hundreds of community residents, turning the former dormitory into a state-of-the-art center for senior activities and community events. In June 2013, SOC moved into the newly named John A. and Marlene L. Boll House. Read more
SMC Luncheon Speaker Tony Michaels
Tony Michaels, president & CEO of The Parade Company, was our SMC Luncheon Speaker on Tuesday, September 25th. The Parade Company will present Detroit’s annual Thanksgiving Parade presented by Art Van. This Annual Event is recognized as one of the 
best Thanksgiving parades in the country by U.S. News & World Report. This year’s Thanksgiving Parade will be held on Thursday, November 22, 2018. The Parade will be featured on WDIV-Local 4, including a one-hour national broadcast reaching more than 190 major cities across the country. News/Talk 760 WJR’s Paul W. Smith and CBS Radio will also broadcast live from the parade route. 104.3 WOMC’s Stephen Clark and JoAnne Purtan (Mornings WOMC) will be hosting the live broadcast.
Jim Nantz, a three-time Emmy Award winner and five-time National Sportscaster of the Year recipient, will serve as Grand Marshal for the 92nd America’s Thanksgiving Parade in Detroit. Tony Michaels said, “We are thrilled to have Jim Nantz serve as Grand Marshal of America’s Thanksgiving Parade in Detroit presented by Art Van and look forward to having him join us on Woodward Avenue on Thanksgiving morning.” Jim is a veteran sportscaster for the National Football League (NFL), National College Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Men’s Basketball and the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) Tour for CBS Sports since 1985.
