Join us on May 22 for an Underground Railroad Tour at Second Baptist Church
Take a ride on the train that traveled without tracks. Sit in the Croghan Street Station and hear the stories of runaways who, escaping slavery, rested in secret at Second Baptist Church before crossing the Detroit River into Canada and “Freedom.”
Tours of the church are conducted by members of the Detroit Underground Railroad Historical Society (DUHRS). Their mission is to collect, preserve and disseminate Church history through lectures, tours and educational programming.
The history of Second Baptist touches on three centuries of service to the community and is equally, if not more, important than our participation to the Underground Railroad. Detroit Underground Historical Railroad Society offers three types of tours designed to fit the various time constraints of our visitors.
We will meet at the Second Baptist Church Bookstore, which is adjacent to the Church at 461 Monroe, on the corner of Monroe and Beaubien. We will pay for our tour tickets ($7 suggested donation) and enter the Church to meet in the sanctuary for our 10 am lecture/tour which will take about 1 1/2 hours. Spouses and friends are welcome to join us. For more info, see their FAQ here.
Greektown Casino has three garages in the area where parking is FREE to those visiting Second Baptist Church. The closest one to the Church is now called the “Brush Street Garage” located on the corner of Lafayette and Brush. The ticket machine has been replaced with a Credit/Debit Card machine. All visitors now must insert a credit or debit card which will lift the arm to allow your car to enter and park. Once you arrive at the Church through the Bookstore entrance, be sure to let the cashier know where you parked. She will give you a “scanning slip.” Once the tour is over and you return to the garage, in order to lift the exit arm you must: 1.) Insert the same card again. 2.) Then immediately scan your slip. The arm goes up and your card is not charged. Please make certain all drivers in your group have the above information in order to get the FREE PARKING.
At the conclusion of the tour, we will walk to Pegasus Taverna at 558 Monroe St. for lunch.
