SMC Speaker Report: Dan Carmody Eastern Market Organization
Our luncheon speaker, Dan Carmody, President of The Eastern Market Organization in Detroit, gave our luncheon members an up to date report on today’s new Eastern Market.
Since it began in the 1800s, Eastern Market has gradually become a cornerstone, nourishing its residents by providing fresh and nutritious food throughout Southeastern Michigan. In more recent years, Eastern Market Corporation has built an infrastructure around the market to support our unwavering mission to enrich Detroit—nutrition-ally, culturally and economically. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, their goal is to maintain Eastern Market’s contribution to Metro Detroit’s importance.
Eastern Market Development Corporation (EMDC) is a community-based non-profit development entity established to ensure that the Eastern Market District remains an authentic and diverse place for all businesses, residents, and visitors. EMDC engages in commercial and mixed-use (mixed-income housing, retail, industrial) development projects in collaboration with private and philanthropic partners. As a nonprofit it includes managing the public market and operating programs to strengthen Metro Detroit’s food sector. They operate programs that increase access to healthy food and incubate and accelerate the growth of the food businesses.
The hours and times for the (EMDC) office at 1445 Adelaide, Detroit, MI 48207 (between Sheds 2 and 3) is varied. You can stop in to ask a question, get maps and recipes on Saturdays from 7am-4pm (year-round); Sundays from 10am-4pm (June-Sept.). District shops and restaurants are open after shed hours. Tuesday, Sunday, & Thursday, the Night Markets are returning from June through September! The Tuesday Markets are a smaller version of the Saturday tradition that includes cooking classes and free yoga/Zumba. The Sunday Market features art, jewelry, Michigan-made products, antiques, entertainment, and more.
