Opening Day Breakfast is Cancelled!

In the interest of safety for the members of the Men’s Club of Grosse Pointe Golf League, the Opening Day breakfast that had been scheduled for April 20, 2020 at the St. Clair Shores Country Club has been cancelled. The coronavirus crisis that has caused the disruption of all major sports, including the PGA, has prompted the Golf Committee to cancel the annual get-together that kicks off the start of our golf season. The recommendations of health care professionals, including “social distancing” and the avoidance of large gatherings of people, led us to the inevitable decision to cancel the historically well-attended event.

Although the breakfast has been cancelled, our season remains scheduled to begin on April 20, 2020. However, that start date is contingent upon whether or not some or all of our four golf courses (Chandler Park, Golden Hawk, Plum Brook, and St. Clair Shores) are open for play as of that date. The Golf Committee will continue to monitor the situation brought about by the coronavirus and will open our golf season once it is deemed safe to do so by healthcare professionals and governmental agencies. Given all the attention garnered by the coronavirus, signing up for the 2020 golf season may have been put on the back burner for many league members, and rightfully so. However, if you intend to participate in league activities this year (which we hope you do!) and haven’t already done so, please issue a check for $50 payable to “SMC Golf League” and mail it to: Mark Jahnke, 7 Fairlake Lane, Grosse Pointe Shores, MI 48236.

And yes, despite the cancellation of our breakfast, we will still be raffling off a dozen premium golf balls, each, to two lucky winners drawn from golfers who sign up for the league by April 13, 2020.

As a final note, we have scheduled a rematch between the Birmingham Senior Men’s Club and our league for July 21, 2020. The format is a 9-hole, two man scramble and will take place at Lincoln Hills Golf Course in Birmingham. The cost will be $40 per golfer, which includes green fees, cart, lunch and prize money. If you are interested in participating in this match and have not already responded to that effect, please let a member of the Golf Committee know of your intent. We will need 18 golfers to form the team plus a few alternates in case one or more team members need to drop out before the match. In the event that we have more members who wish to play than available spots on the team, team members will be chosen by the Golf Committee based on handicaps.
