In typical Michigan fashion, the weather transitioned within days from the 30s on Opening Day for league play on April 26th to the upper 80s. There was no gradual progression through the 50s, 60s, and 70s, but we’ll gladly embrace the long-awaited warmth, nonetheless!
With June comes the first of our two annual Scramble competitions. It’s time to assemble your teams! Scramble Week is June 21 – 25 with a make-up week of June 28 – July 2. Please note that the make-up week is precisely that, an alternative week provided for members who are unable to participate during the Scramble Week of June 21 – 25. If a member participates during the Scramble Week of June 21 – 25, and again during the make-up/alternative week of June 28 – July 2, the scramble team score for the make-up/alternative week will not be considered.
A full list of Scramble Rules will be e-mailed separately to all league members well before Scramble Week. As members may recall, the rule relative to the minimum number of tee shots per team member was changed last year, reduced from 3 tee shots per player to 2 per player, and tee shots on Par 3s qualify to satisfy the 2 tee shot minimum.
The main thing is to have fun out there while enjoying the sun and warmer temperatures. It’s hard to beat a summer day in Michigan spent out on the links!
for The Golf Committee
The 2021 Season for the Men’s Club of Grosse Pointe Golf League is officially underway. Play started as scheduled on April 26 while the traditional opening day break-fast was on hiatus due to the continued presence of the COVID-19 virus. The 2021 Season will run through September 24th , after which we hold out hope that we will be able to host our end-of-season banquet for club members and their guests in early October.
A big “Thank You” to all of those who signed up early for league membership. A drawing was held for golfers who registered for membership by April 12th and Jim Lloyd and John Nantais were the winners of a dozen Cal-loway ERC golf balls. Congratulations, Jim and John, and we hope that your new golf balls stay exclusively on the straight and narrow!
It’s not too late to register for league membership for the 2021 season. We encourage all members of the Men’s Club of Grosse Pointe and all past members of the golf league to sign up for play this year and to spread the word of our league to friends and acquaintances. Remember, you do not have to be a member of the Men’s Club or be a resident of Grosse Pointe to participate in the golf league. All are welcome as long as they are over 55 years of age or retired. The cost of membership re-mains at $50 and can be paid by check payable to “SMC Golf League” and mailed to Mark Jahnke, 7 Fairlake Lane, Grosse Pointe Shores, MI 48236.
Best wishes to all of our members for a great golf season this year! It’s been rough going for almost a year and a half now but there are signs a return to near normalcy may be around the corner. Getting out on the links with friends, taking in the wonders of the great outdoors and enjoying a pleasant round of golf on a lush green golf course may be the best tonic for all of us!
“It took me seventeen years to get three thousand hits in baseball. I did it in one afternoon on the golf course.” – Hank Aaron
Not only was “Hammerin’ Hank” one of the greatest baseball players of all time, he obviously had a great sense of humor. May the gentleman rest in peace!
Reminder the 2021 season for the Men’s Club of Grosse Pointe Golf League begins Monday, April 26, 2021. In the interest of safety, the Golf Committee has decided that there will be no Opening Day breakfast. Let’s hope we can get back to “normal” in 2022 and enjoy breaking our fast together on Opening Day as was customary in the past.
Golf league players can begin league play starting April 26th at any of our four courses (Chandler Park, Golden Hawk, Plumbrook & St. Clair Shores). Registration for the 2021 season is in full swing! If you intend to participate in the league this year and have not yet done so, please send a check for $50 payable to “SMC Golf League” to Mark Jahnke, 7 Fairlake Lane, Grosse Pointe Shores, MI 48236.
Remember, those who register for league membership by April 12, 2021 will be entered into a raffle in which two winners will be selected, each of whom will receive a dozen Callaway E.R.C. golf balls!
One final note, a 9-hole, two-man scramble, pitting our league versus the Birmingham Men’s Club Golf League, has been tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, September 29, 2021. This competitive, fun event has been on hiatus the past few years due to a variety of factors, but we are optimistic that we can pull it off this year and continue with the event indefinitely into the future. The two clubs have alternated being the “host” of the match in the past and Birmingham is scheduled to host this year. Assuming it remains a “go”, the match will take place at Lincoln Hills Golf Course in Birmingham and the cost will be $40 per golfer which includes greens fees, cart, lunch and prize money. If you are interested in participating in this event please advise Jim Regan (313-980-0572) or Mark Jahnke (586-707-0239). We will need (18) golfers to form the team, plus a few alternates in case one or more team members needs to drop out before the match. In the event we have more members who wish to play than available spots on the team, team members will be chosen by the Golf Committee based on handicaps.
That’s it for now! Happy Spring to all!
It is with a great deal of regret that we inform members of the Men’s Club of Grosse Pointe Golf League that the end-of-season Golf Banquet is cancelled. This annual finale of our golf season had been scheduled for October 8, 2020 at the Barrister Gardens in St. Clair Shores. It was the unanimous decision of the members of the Golf Committee to not proceed with the banquet in light of the uncertainties and certainties associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Given that expenses associated with the banquet are factored into the annual membership fee paid by members to the Golf League, we plan to reduce the fee for league membership for the 2021 season. The exact amount of the reduction will not be determined until prize money for the 2020 season has been calculated and distributed to league members.
Being truly a break-even operation (Golf Committee members receive no compensation for their time) the fee reduction will be the maximum possible after the math is computed!
Arghhh … it’s September already! Sadly, along with the end of summer comes the end of our golf season. All scores through Friday, September 18, 2020 will be collected and tabulated for league purposes. After that, you’re on your own with no more pressure to turn in your scorecards!
Despite the challenges that were placed on all of us by the pandemic this year, we hope that every member of the league was able to get out and enjoy the wonders of the outdoors, the camaraderie of your fellow golfers and some good shots (at least, now and then!). We hope to see all of you back in 2021, which has to be a better year, right?
